The Ghost in the Big Brass Bed

ISBN 0553158279 - Slightly thicker than the average book for this age set, The Ghost appeals to my mystery-loving side AND the mom-side that likes to see a kid read more. Although one in a series from Coville, it's not necessary to have read the previous books to be able to catch up, which is a huge bonus for readers who happen upon this one without ever having seen the others. Slight Spoiler Alert - My last paragraph should be skipped by those who don't want to know anything about the ending. Nina, aka Nine, Tanleven and her friend Chris have developed a sensitivity to ghosts (this happened mostly in the two earlier books), which has served them well and is about to do so again. Offered a job in an antique store by a friend of her father, Nine accepts, partly because the shop is close to Chris's house. Living on opposite sides of town, the two girls don't get to see enough of one another and the job will make it easier to spend time together. The first day on the job, Nine meets an old lady who walks into the store and begins to sob over the piece of furniture Nine is dusting. Norma, Nine's boss, introduces the pair and unknowingly starts Nine and Chris on their next ghosthunting adventure. The old lady is Phoebe Watson, daughter of local artist Cornelius Fletcher, who died a mad and broken man. There was a rumor of a missing work of art, the Lost Masterpiece, which is said to be worth millions, but it's never turned up and now Phoebe faces losing her family home. Needless to say, that family home is haunted - and the riddle of the ghosts who reside there with Phoebe is only one mystery the girls must solve because this time their very lives are at stake! I'm not absolutely sure, but Coville seems to have abandoned Nine and Chris after this book, which is too bad - the pair obviously had tremendous potential in their developing sensitivity to spirits, not to mention the other peripheral issues - the distance between them, the women who constantly pursue Nine's father... Some parents might find Phoebe's death and the life-threatening hostage-taking scene at the end to be a bit much for the younger reader, but I don't think anyone will be scarred for life by it. Ghost story fans will be as sad as I was to get to the end and realize Nine and Chris have hunted their last ghost!

A great ghost story for kids...

Working for a family friend's antique business, sixth-grader Nina Tanleven stumbles upon a customer with a haunted house! Not only is one of Phoebe Watson's bedrooms haunted with the ghost of a sobbing little girl, but there's a painting of soldiers dying on a field, which transfixes Nina. What's the connection between Phoebe, the little girl, and the painting? Nina doesn't know, but with the help of her best friend Chris, she's determined to find out! When she's not out hunting ghosts, Nina is just a regular girl. Abandoned by her mother at a young age, Nina and her father are particularly close, and tomboyish Chris proves a perfect companion for all her adventures...

A Definite Read

If you like books about ghosts, than this book is for you. Nine Tanleven is helping out at an antique store, and when she visits an old house, a mysterious girl appears on a brass bed. Then more scary stuff happens and now Nine, with Cris (her friend) has to solve the mystery.

Mysterious

This is a great mystery book, that takes place in a haunted house. I would especially recommend it for girls, since the main characters are two girls named Nina & Chris. One of them works in an antiquery and is asked to go to Miss Watson's house to pick up an antique wardrobe... being best friends they go together, and when they arrive at the house they realise that there was a lot more than they had expected... in a tower room, they find a big brass bed with a sad little ghost girl...When they start investigating, they find that she is not the only ghost in the house, and that the rest are not at all as nice as she is, and not very happy to see them....

Excellent Book!

The Ghost in the Big Brass Bed is a great book by Bruce Coville. In this book, Nina and her friend Chris are risking their lives to figure out a mystery, onw they are sure of is that they are going to figure out. They only thing they focus on is the Ghost in Pheobe Waston's house. It all begins when Nina starts to work at an antigue store on Saturdays. Her and on of her co-workers go to pick up on antique from Pheobe's house and as soon as Nina walks in to the house, she knoows it is haunted. That's how it all begins and to findout teh exciting events that take place later in teh story, just read the book. THe book level is probably more for middle school students. It is a great bool for girls and boys. They will love it. It was so interesting to read that even my mom read it. Read this woderful book and gelp Chris and Nina find the Lost Masterpiece. There is nothing you won't like about this book.
