Almost a Gothic romance

Synopsis from back of the book: If Sophie Firle consented to Nicholas Hatton's outrageous request she would put her life--and her son's--in mortal danger. But could she refuse the opportunity of help trap smugglers who had murdered her husband? Finding herself penniless, and faced with the reality of running a struggling inn. Sophie had no option but to agree to Nicholas' proposal. But the plan also meant that Nicholas would have to be a guest at the inn--and pose as her admirer! And he proved to be remarkably convincing... I liked the story line very much, and the mystery was very well written, my criticism was the portrayal of the heroine, Sophie Firle. I found she was too easily offended and quick to gave in to anger, although the writer explained away those outbursts, I nevertheless still questioned her maturity. I also thought she was given too much credit for her "bravery"--she was unfortunately captured as a hostage when a smuggling bust gone wrong, the heroic welcome was a bit exaggerate in my eye, and no need for Nicholas to beg for her affection so fervently. With all that said, I still find this as a decent book.
