More adventure than romance, but still good

Don't be mislead by the cover, which shows two embracing lovers in the snow, outside their carriage with matched horses. The book takes place during the French Revolution, and Emmas and Simon are dirty, ragged, and on foot through most of the book as they try to escape from France. The book is gritty and mildly disturbing with its descriptions of the violence of the Revolution, but fairly mild for a historical(no sexual assault). The loving couple are so busy staying alive that they don't have much time for romance, with their romance being kisses only. The hero, Simon, is a strong, silent type with a sad past and the heroine starts out a little rebellious and spoiled but learns to cope with bad situations. The story is a bit confusing in that Simon supposedly hasn't been a soldier, and has disappointed his father, yet his experience on the battlefield is mentoned. Overall, the book shows a nice romance developing between Simon and Emma but it takes a backseat to the adventure of just surviviving. Still, a well-researched novel and one worth reading.
