A decent book, dragged a bit at some parts but good.

Was a good book, I enjoyed it, there was a few things I would have changed and I few things I disliked but it was what it was. I must comment on one of the other reviews here stating men then just saw a women they wanted a took her in that time, I didn't know this was set in the Dark ages? (I'm being sarcastic), no, men did not just rape women they wanted in the 19th century, men used to hang rapists or beat them to death. People need to stop rewriting history, if a man raped a women then he was a criminal, normal men then did not do this and I'm allarmed at the amount of people who think they did. Real men protected women against those criminal men then, again stop thinking anything before the 20th century was the dark ages, they weren't.

Surprised

I read this book and although there was a rape seen, (I didn't see the need to go into the details of what happened), I liked the book because it was more realistic of that time period. During that time men went out saw a woman they wanted and took her. At least Holt had her get rich before she married him to show that she could live off her own money if she chose. Kathy was strong in the begining and she was strong at the end. Think about it, she had to marry a guy she didn't know and barely liked, because of they're son. She knew that he had gotten his act together over the years that she had disappeared and became someone else. I think it was beautiful that her beauty conquered the beast that he was.

Don't be Fooled by the Title!

Don't be fooled with the title! It is not satanic or has anything to so with the occult! I didn't read it because I thought it was bad, but my cousin told me it wasn't. It is actually an expression for someone who is attracted to a bad person. The book is about Kate, a young lady that comes from a long line of miniature painters. As her father looses his eyesight, she secretly paints his miniatures for him. As she slowly breaks the gender barrier of Victorian Europe, she meets the Baron de Centeville. He uses her to take revenge on his cousin, and the result changes her life completely. She leaves and thinks the Baron is out of her life, but they meet again in war-torn Paris. Will she ever forgive him?I really liked this book, and I'm glad my cousin let me know it was all right to read. Holt also makes a profound statement about euthanasia.

The title does NOT say it all

Readers that like trashy romance books will be displeased by this book. it is very well wrote, and in my opinion, one of the best of Victoria holt's(Jean Plaidy's, Philippa Carr's) books. It has a unique story line which includes Mystery, Romance, and History all combined into a thrilling and fun plot. It shows the two sides of human nature, good and evil, through Rollo a main character whom you will love and hate. I highly recomend this book and most of the authors other works.
