Nipper Mooney is a wonder.

This book is a great read. It quickly...and humourously...pulls you into connecting with Nipper on his journey through childhood's mysteries. He's a little boy with a simple rural life full of the complexities of childhood wonder moving to the realism of adulthood. The writing is full of detail and symbolism which are only fully appreciated on the second read as you'll be too engulfed in the story-line and events first time round to appreciate it all. There's an aesthetism and gentleness to the feeling of this book in spite of the cruelty and violence of Nipper's experiences in the Catholic school system of 1960's Newfoundland. The characters in Nipper's life readily come to life and the suggestion of fairy presence adds flavour and depth to his reflections on life. Overall highly recommended and easy to read.
