This outstanding book has 21 extremely practical chapters which are a wonderful source of information for medical residents trying to find a job but are also useful for anyone interested in starting a business of their own. There are a number of chapters about finding a job including how to find the perfect job, signing the contract, physician compensation arrangements, opportunities in sports medicine, and strategies for an academic career. There are also chapters on starting and running your own business including successful medical marketing for practice survival, using the media to promote your practice, running the office without a glitch, and monitoring the financial vital signs of your medical practice. Other chapters discuss public health and health care management including-from medicine to management: when physicians become executives and physician involvement in subacute and long-term care. There is a chapter on business and management training for physicians. The book addresses legal issues in the chapters malpractice and going to court. The chapter planning for your personal financial success should be required reading for all. This book even has a chapter on opportunities in alternative and complementary medicine. In just one book, you get advice on making career decisions, personal financial planning, medical-legal issues, advertising your practice, and how to run a successful business. The information not taught in medical school. A must read!

Four years of medical school and four years of residency and business skills are never discussed. As physicians we leave most business decisions up to others. This book gives you the basic understanding of "The Business of Medicine" and encourages the physician to take control of this aspect of their practice. Everyone bought Harrison's for internal medicine in medical school. Every physician should have a copy of this book in their medical library!
