Book Overview

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - Discover the lost Seuss These rarely seen Dr. Seuss stories were published in magazines in the early 1950s and are finally available in book form.

What's better than a lost treasure? Seven lost treasures This book includes:

- "The Bippolo Seed," in which a scheming feline leads a duck toward a bad decision
- "The Rabbit, the Bear, and the Zinniga-Zanniga," about a rabbit who is saved from a bear by a single eyelash
- "Gustav, the Goldfish," an early rhymed version of the Beginner Book A Fish Out of Water
- "Tadd and Todd," about a twin who is striving to be an individual
- "Steak for Supper," in which fantastic creatures follow a boy home in anticipation of a steak dinner
- "The Strange Shirt Spot," the inspiration for the bathtub-ring scene in The Cat in the Hat Comes Back
- "The Great Henry McBride," about a boy whose far-flung career fantasies are bested only by those of Dr. Seuss himself

An introduction by Seuss scholar Charles D. Cohen traces the history of the stories, the emergence of the writing style we now associate with Dr. Seuss, and recurring themes like the importance of the imagination or the perils of greed. This is a collection that no Seuss fan will want to miss.

Enjoyable collection with some morals

The Bippolo Seed story gives me an excellent opportunity to talk with my children about roots of selfishness and stewardship concepts regarding money or items of value. The main character is egged on bby a seeming antagonist toward greed, but truly his heart is exposed as selfish right from the start. He encounters this seed which will give him a wish and he immediately only considers his own needs and wants, which seems reasonable and moderate - he has enough food to eat. But he never once considers how a wish could benefit others. The cat sees that root of selfishness and encourages it toward further greed. I like to discuss how a benevolent character could see that his own needs are met and wish for food for his friends, etc. Quantity of goods is not the moral issue - the nature of the heart is. My young children were a little intimidated by the level of greed manifested in an ugly way and didn't prefer this story - but I like it because the morals are clear-cut and will not be as intimidating when they grow. My three year old LOVES Gustav the Goldfish story. The story about the shirt with a spot is very evidently themed like the Cat in the Hat Comes Back, so I find it a bit boring. Overall my children and I enjoyed the collection of stories.

We like to tell this is a very good book

We've all chuckled at The Cat in the Hat's antics, mused about what goes into Green Eggs and Ham, bristled at the mistreatment of Horton, and wondered at the silliness of those Sneetches. But the prolific author has plenty of equally brilliant works you might not know exist. Here are fourteen of Dr. Seuss's hidden gems.
