Most beginner coding books stop at toy exercises. This one ends with something your student can put on the internet and hand to somebody.
Over twenty chapters, students in grades 9 through 12 build an interactive Sherlock Holmes case file that runs in a browser. They pick a case, read the client's account, and examine a scene drawn on canvas. Clues they collect decide which deductions unlock, so the interface changes as they work out what happened. Case data comes from a file they write themselves. Solved cases are remembered between visits.
Then they close that project and build something entirely of their own, from an empty folder, using only what they now know.
