A grave-marker, located in the cemetery of Franklin Village, Michigan, serves as the inspiration for TANSY BITTERS, TANSY SWEET....a novel written by author and longtime resident of Franklin, David Lee Roberts. The marker reads "Richard Trick, Company E., 30th Michigan infantry, died October 27, 1865". Military records research reveals no reference to Mr. Trick being a member of the 30th Michigan Infantry or of any Civil War unit. This mystery inspired the author to create a story containing interesting fictional characters whose lives intertwine with the lives and wartime events that were a part of the little village during the 1860s.
A real page turner of epic proportions! The author blends action and romance into an outstanding story of the American Civil War. The characters become alive in the mind of the reader, to the point where you worry about them when you put the book down - as you must from time to time. It would make an outstanding tv mini series.
An excellent first book for David Lee Roberts

David Roberts writes about the historic Franklin Village, located in South-East Michigan, and adds a local touch to civil war history. He blends his fictional characters to real events, such as the battle of second Mannassas (Bull-Run), and the attempted capture of the USS Michigan by the Confederate Secret Service. The book is well-researched, even including documents from the time period to illustrate its events. "Matthew Greyson is a Michigan farmer and a distinguished veteran of the Mexican War. He joins the Union Army's 1st Michigan Cavalry and fights valiantly in many battles and skirmishes, including Bull Run. He leaves his betrothed, the stunning Bethany, behind, and he trusts his homestead to a raggedly dressed but determined teenager named Dick Trick, who is also one of Bethany's students at the local school. Bethany, however, is the daughter of a Confederate major. She becomes a reluctant agent for the Confederate Secret Service while worrying about Matthew's safety on the other side of the line. Her adventures as an undercover spy and as a caregiver to the sick illuminate her dogged determination to be reunited witht he love of her life. Meanwhile, Dick, at an awkward 16 years old, tends to Matthew's farm and basks in his new responsibility. He and the beautiful 15-year-old Hannah Midgley are secretly engaged as the war rages" -From the press release
