Sugar is killing you. If you are typical, you are consuming enough sugar (or foods that act like sugar) to cause damage throughout your body. The destruction brought on by sugar doesn't happen quickly, but slowly over time; much like the damage done by another addictive substance: cigarettes. Sugarettes, by Dr. Scott Olson ND, explores our obsession with sugar and its resulting health consequences. The average person eats an astonishing half-pound of sugar a day. For many of us, we don't eat that much sugar because we want to, but because we have to-much like any other addict. While the taste might be sweet to the tongue, the effects of this sugary compulsion are not. Sugar addiction is a contributing factor to the worldwide epidemic of diabetes, heart disease, and obesity and other health problems. With such a tempting enemy, is it any wonder we are losing the health wars?Dr. Scott's Sugarettes forces us to look at our sugar addiction and what consequences it has for our health. It details specific and actionable steps every individual can take to master their diets and take control of their addictive relationship with sugar, empowering consumers with the tools to change their lives and their heath.
As someone who has an addiction to sugar and it affects my health greatly, this book is a wealth of information. It gives much insight, education and ideas for trying to become a healthier person. I have struggled with many health issues for many years. One of them...Fibromyalgia. I believe sugar addiction is a major cause of fatigue and ongoing issues with hypoglycemia. I would recommend this book to anyone who might be struggling with the same issues and is looking to feel & be healthier. I would also recommend it just for the education behind the sugar addiction epidemic, that is happening in our country!
Great book on type II diabetes

Sugarettes I have found "Sugarettes", by Dr. Scott Olsen, to be a great read for anyone who is interested in how sugar works in your body, and more importantly, why you cannot stop eating it. I am an acupuncturist and addiction specialist and this book is the best book I have found to help my patients understand why sugar is so hard to stop eating, and why it is so important to your health to reduce how much you eat. I recommend this book to all of my type II diabetes patients, and to any patient who is trying to lose weight, but has a problem with sugar cravings. The feedback that I have gotten from my patients has been great. I commend Dr. Olsen for having the stones to stand up to this huge industry that has somehow controlled the research to continue selling their goods.
Great motivational read

I like to read motivational books on eating healthy and was lucky enough to get this book. Dr. Olson's style of writing kept me captive as I sat and drank my coffee (with sugar.) After finishing the book instead of feeling guilty about eating sugar, I find I'm more "aware" of when I consume it. I think Dr. Olson is surely on to something when he writes about the fact that there are no "real" or "official" studies that link sugar to obesity or diabetes...similar to smoking vs. cancer (in the 50's and 60's.) Having a grandmother who had diabetes and required insulin shots every day, I never knew what it was actually doing for her. This book cleared that up for me and explained it in such a way I actually understood without having to re-read that chapter again...meaning it was written with language I (and most non-scientists) could understand. I'm glad I read this...and it sticks in the back of my mind when my grocery cart starts gravitating toward high-glycemic foods in the store. Great motivation for anyone who is trying to eat a more healthy diet.
Reading this makes it easier to quit sugar

I was shocked to learn so many things in this book but, I think the most surprising is how fast sugar adds up and how damaging it is. Dr. Olson made it easy to understand and fun and different to read. It really helps saying no to the kids when I know what's happening when they eat sugar! Thanks, Dr. Olson!
Sugar (Carb) Addiction Is As Bad As Nicotine, Heroin, And Crack Cocaine!
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 17 years ago
What if we started treating sugar addiction like we do nicotine, heroin or crack cocaine addiction? Do you think it would change our perspective about how we view it? You bet it would which was the intention of the author and naturopathic physician Dr. Scott Olson when he wrote the book. Making the case that sugar is as harmful to public health as any drug out there today, Olson outlines all the ins and outs of this issue to help sugar addicts overcome their problem. Much of his advice focuses on cutting out not just the sugars that you consume, but also anything that would turn to sugar in the body. In other words, starchy carbohydrates are considered sugar by his definition as well. This is a perfect read for anyone who is following a controlled-carb nutritional approach and needs an extra boost of support in overcoming the need for sugar in their lives forever.
