Gorgeously designed and illustrated, Staake's Struwwelpeter is sure to spark as many "oooo's" and "ahhhh's" as it does nightmares. This is a new Blab storybook, a series of graphic novels showcasing artists from Monte Beauchamp's annual BLAB anthology, presented in a faux-children's book format, though aimed squarely at adults and young adults.
The only book illustrated by Bob Staake that I can't recommend

I will preface this review with saying I love dark humor for children - death, limb removal, general creepiness inclusive - and I'm an artist. I bought this book because I like the art of Bob Staake and although I love all his other books, this is the one exception. Even though it's from another time (the story) there is no excuse for this perpetuation of racism that used to be acceptable to some. Especially for children! I can't even in good conscience give it away. Very sad to me because I know the illustrator is a nice person, but I just don't know how he could agree to illustrate this story. I know our history as humans has not always been kind and we can't change that, but moving forward, there's no place for this. All the other books Bob has illustrated and those he has also written are delightful.
