Sporting Architecture

By George Tattersall

Book Overview

Behind every great country house stood a working world of stables, kennels, and service buildings designed with as much care as the main facade. Buildings made for sport, beautifully. In Sporting Architecture, George Tattersall captures that hidden landscape of Victorian era British architecture with crisp, practical plates drawn for real estates across 19th century England buildings. The result is both practical and strangely atmospheric: a blueprint of rural life, discipline, and display. Part architecture design pattern book, part illustrated architectural drawing collection, this historic building plan book sets out stable design and layouts, hunting kennel architectural plans, and other country estate outbuildings design with an eye for proportion, circulation, and day-to-day use. These country house architecture plates read as a direct reference for architects builders, craftspeople, and owners: how a yard is arranged, where light and ventilation fall, how routes separate horses, hounds, staff, and guests. It is equally valuable for restoration and heritage research, offering period-true solutions that still speak to modern equestrian facility design. For collectors of design history, it reveals working elegance beyond the grand rooms. A cornerstone in the story of British building practice. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure. Whether you browse for the beauty of measured drawings or keep it close as a working guide, Sporting Architecture stands as a lucid record of how Britain built for sport, status, and service.
