SPEAKING OF ART came out of a series of essays written over the past two years involving many of the art works in the author's large collection of paintings and small sculptures. Li Clement, the gifted illustrator of this book, has provided pen and ink drawings of each selected piece that captures its essence with wry and sometimes comical touches of her own. Some of the art might be characterized as 'fine', some as 'folk', but the writer herself considers both categories as being of equal artistic value. While a few of the essays are written in the voice of the writer, most are 'spoken' by the art itself as each piece addresses the reader. They offer their observations, their complaints and their hopes, and often describe their interactions with one another. Some are whimsical, some wistful, some poignant, others angry, but the individual objects themselves are infused by the writer with a wit and intelligence that for all we know may actually exist.
