Socialism And Modern Science: (Darwin, Spencer, Marx)

By Enrico Ferri

Socialism and modern science is a 19th century political philosophy and scientific sociology work that examines the relationship between socialist ideology and modern scientific theories, particularly evolution, sociology, and economic analysis. It is important for its argument that socialism is compatible with scientific progress and represents an outcome of social evolution rather than an opposing force. The work explores how ideas from Darwinian evolution, Spencerian sociology, and Marxist economic theory intersect in explaining the development of human societies. It engages with late 19th century intellectual debates about whether scientific theories of evolution support social inequality or collective progress. Referencing discussions from European academic forums, it addresses critics who claimed Darwinism justified social hierarchy, instead arguing that socialism acknowledges individual differences while promoting equal rights and fair social structures. The text interprets class struggle and economic disparity as historical and evolutionary processes, suggesting that socialist organization emerges as a rational stage in societal development shaped by scientific understanding and social necessity. The work stands out as a significant contribution to early sociological thought, linking science and political theory and influencing later discussions on socialism, evolution, and the structure of modern society.
