The Shape of Water.

Guillermo Del Toro is the writer and director of “Pan's Labyrinth” (2006). So, you know what to expect. This is a period piece from the 1962 Cold War era, but it looks much older. Strickland (Michael Shannon) captures a sea creature (Doug Jones) and packs it away in a secret government facility. A mute woman, Elisa (Sally Hawkins), falls in love with it. The capturer also is in to torcher. This is touted as a fairy tale. According to the end credits: “Adapted works by Hakim Sanai.” So, the poem at the end of The Shape of This movie is an adaptation by Guillermo del Toro of a translation made by Priya Hemenway of an original poem by Hakim Sanai. Hemenway’s translation appears on page 41 of her book The Book of Everything: Journey of the Heart’s Desire: Hakim Sanai’s Walled Garden of Truth.
