The night air is thick with tension and mopane dust. A crescent moon hangs low over the bushveld, casting silver shadows across elephant trails and forgotten ranger paths. In the far distance, a hyena laughs - not with joy, but with hunger.
Hidden beneath the skeletal remains of a fever tree, two men lie motionless. One of them, Gideon Marais, doesn't blink. He's learned, after decades in the bush and the military, that stillness is a weapon. The other man, younger, is trembling-his breath shallow, heart racing.
"They'll come from the riverbed," Gideon whispers. "They always do."
A moment later, the night erupts. Headlamps flash like predator eyes, and the guttural throb of diesel engines splits the quiet. Three unmarked trucks crawl through the sand like steel beasts. Inside them: men with automatic weapons and tranquilizer darts tipped with sedatives meant for rhinos.
Gideon raises his hand. The click of a satellite phone camera shutters in the dark. Evidence. Proof. The last piece of a puzzle he's been chasing for months.
Behind this convoy lies a story far bigger than poaching. Corrupt officials. International syndicates. Whispered names in government corridors. And at the center of it all, a dying heritage - Africa's wild heart, bleeding horn by horn.
