An attractive, helpful introduction

Like most of the Hamlyn titles, this is an oversized books with numerous color illustrations. It is meant as a basic guide to oriental rugs, defined broadly (see table of contents in productwiki). The book begins with a chapter of history on the rugs and explains different types (e.g. prayer rugs). The large categories of rugs are discussed in a general way. There is a chapter on motifs with clear line-drawing illustrations. The book then has chapters on each large grouping of rugs, breaking them down to local variations. There is generally one picture for each type of rug. In addition, there are pictures of weaers and dyers, rugs at use in the Orient and Europe. The book ends with a chapter on the selection and care of the rugs. I am no expert on this subject, but this is a nice introduction: informative but not overwhelming, colorful and attractive. I like that all the pictures are in color, and that they have cosen to cover a wide range of styles of rugs. Since it was produced in 1977, there may be a few points that are obsolete, but most of the information and advice is pretty timeless. This is clearly not intended as a guide to investing: the author urges extended further reading. A bibliography might have been helpful, although it would of course become dated.
