George Eliot meets Virginia Woolf

Goldberg has an extraordinary feel for the dynamics of family. I loved her sharp, astute reflections on the relation of daily life to history. The characters are compelling and believable and the author's play with the surface skin of syntax gets at something about how people think and feel in a surprising, fresh way. Something like George Eliot meets Virginia Woolf, if you get my drift: density of characterization and relationships within families, joined with linguistic experimentation exploring interior states. It's a supurbly original book and a great read.
