Book Overview

This new book by the influential psychoanalyst, Roy Schafer focuses on a vacuum that has developed between psychoanalysis and critical thinkers in the social sciences and humanities. Schafer's goal is to weave psychoanalytic discourse into the tapestry of modern trends in intellectual history, notably linguistic and hermeneutic approaches to interpretation.

On How to Speak with Clients

Schafer's chapter on how to talk with clients is the freshest and most straightforward work to date. While respecting analytic ideas and formulations, he rails at the unnatural, stiff, and artificial way of speaking to clients that has become all too familiar in analytic and non-analytic circles alike. He makes a strong argument in favor of speaking-for-oneself as a therapist without falling into the trap of revealing everything. New students of psychotherapy will save themselves many wasted hours by reading this book and veterans will find it as stimulating and challenging as the Analytic Attitude, Schafer's classic text.
