Fantasy with a hint of romance

I really enjoyed this book! At first, I wasn't even going to read it because all the other reviews said that the romantic aspect of the book wasn't developed all the way. Also, the cover made it look much more like a comdey. However, I actually liked how the author developed the relationship between the two characters, and wasn't dissapointed thanks to the other reviews. The relationship was fun and witty,and Lee's sarcasm made me laugh throughout. The author also does an amazing job at showing the different sides to an argument and lets the reader decide for themselves about the system instated for the Pairs. I felt like the summary on the back of the book was a bit inadequete, because the dislike Lee feels for Karish only lasts for a little while. They seem to get over their differences pretty early on in the book. For the most part, Lee tries to figure out what caused the catastrophic weather that wiped out all the other Pairs while trying to find Karish when he has been kidnapped. Some parts of the book did confuse me. The people in the world seem much more laid back with phrases such as 'my love', and 'darling' when flirting, and doesn't mean anything deep. The gender relationships are also more laid back, but this is not emphasized. Also, I felt like the author didn't explain some things in full, like the Paris' powers, but thankfully it does get cleared up as the book goes on. This book is definitely one to read over and over again!

Nothing to Resent Here

Sometimes, a fantasy story comes along that simply isn't meant to be taken seriously. This is one of them. Not to say that that's a bad thing. On the contrary, it's wonderful. Resenting the Hero happily mocks a number of fantasy standards, yet manages to avoid completely sacrificing its own story to do so. The plot is not mindblowing or anything, far from it, but it is well suited to the humorous type of story that Resenting the Hero is. Moore definitely has the ability to write something completely serious. You can see that in her world, which has some very interesting aspects to it. And it would be nice in the future to see what else she can do, but hopefully NOT with this series. The satirical tone is priceless, and I'd hate to see the sense of humor disappear. The characters are amusing mixes of the extreme characteristics seen in a lot of modern day fantasy novels. Karish is good-looking, charming, admired by everyone, and he doesn't like it one bit. Which we've all seen. But he isn't a complete moody fop, either, as said character-types tend to turn out to be, and channels some of the traits of your typical arrogant, sleeps-with-everyone male character. An entertaining mix. The same goes for Lee. She might be very intelligent, and her first instinct is (almost) always right, but she shares the typical flat-chested, plain-faced physical traits of a classic anti-Mary Sue. If you're really snobby about your fantasy, you probably won't enjoy this. Which is really too bad, because it's one of the funniest comic fantasies I've ever read. Definitely worth a look if you like that sort of thing.

Pleasantly surprised by a new author

I picked this title up on a whim and found myself engaged and entertained the whole way through. Once you get past the ridiculously inappropriate cover you find a fascinating story that leaves you wanting more. The author has done a good job of mixing lighthearted banter and mystery all set in a world that is strange enough to be interesting but not so foreign that you can't understand what is going. I can't wait to find out what our protagonists are going to do next.

completely deceptive cover for a terrific book

Despite what some other customer reviews have said, it's not a fantasy novel and the cover is completely misleading. The most misleading cover I can ever recall. Clearly the artist did not read the book; probably artists never do. But this one didn't even read a 1-page outline. The novel is *not* a comic fantasy about a foolish fop and his thrall. It's certainly not comic. It's not even a fantasy, exactly. The setting is Pernish: a hostile planet abandoned by the weaker of its colonists, reverted to a medieval culture, and preserved by paranormals. But no sentient animals. Terrific action. Interesting characters. A halfway decent resolution.

Loved the Hero, and the Heroine

This first novel was refreshingly tongue-in-cheek. The cover sums up the heroine's feelings well enough. The synopsis above describes the plot well enough that I won't waste time repeating it. This book sucked me in from the get-go. It was delightfully funny and heartwrenching in turns. The heroine gets paired with a man who is the antithesis of everything she wanted in a partner and is severely disappointed. She wasted no time in subtly letting him know that. In fact there was no subtlty to it. She was just short of rude. The hero, on the otherhand, seemed to be quite open and accepting of his new partner and maybe even a little attracted to her in the beginning. But as time and exposure always does, they begin to learn that the person underneath may not be as advertised. They have to learn to trust each other with their lives. The resentment slowly fades under a growing admiration and comraderie. In the end, their fledgling trust is put to the ultimate test. The book was smart, funny and endearing. I have already recommended it to everyone I know! I am highly anticipating the sequel and the author has a third planned! Yeah! I love following a set of characters that I have watched mature and grow. BTW: this book was not a romance- their relationship is completely platonic- which made it strangely enough, more interesting.
