common ideas to most research fields

If you have done research in most other fields of study, then much of this book's advice will be familiar and germane. Like analysing existing research efforts and identifying [or trying to at least] the hypotheses of those efforts, especially if these are not explicitly delineated. The book has a concise take on key statistical ideas. Enough for a qualitative understanding. But you really need a more indepth text on statistics if you are actually going to conduct research.
