My Favorite Remedial Phonics Book

I've been a volunteer phonics tutor for 10 years. This is my favorite book to use. I've also developed my own phonics lessons and games, but I reach for this book often to review areas my students are stuggling with. It's well laid out and teaches all the phonics rules and principles you need to know in an orderly fashion.

Parents, this is the book for you

Simple, to the point. This is a very well organized,easy to use book for parents who want to help their children learn to read using the phonics method.

great overview of phonics for parents

I have read a number of books on phonics, some far more detailed, but I really like this one because it gives such a well organized overview of the subject. It really gives the reader the "big picture" of what phonics is all about. It also gets right to the point of how to help your child, without going into the long drawn out criticisms of the public school system that I have seen in other books. If you're just starting to work with your child, or trying to get a better understanding of how all the rules fit together, this is the book for you.

Excellent on Phonics rules, highly readable

Author approaches learning Phonics like learning math. He uses four levels to start with the simple rules and graduate to the more complex ones. Explains each rule and then illustrates each with many words. Stories at each level are supplied. Usuable for adult learners. Many exercises even though it is not not a workbook. Book would benefit from comprehensive list of all rules, strategies on how to use them as a whole, more on correspondence between sounds and spellings, and how to deal with rule exceptions. Is a prescription for a cure but doesn't diagnose common mistakes. However, these limitations are minor compared to its strengths. Highly recommend as best-of-breed on Phonics.

Look no further. This book contains everything you wanted to know and more. It is written in easy to comprehend language, therefore, anyone can teach the phonetic method. The results are amazing. Your child will grasp onto this method very rapidly.Hats off to the author!
