Gouache Painting as Art

Deals with gouache painting as stand-alone two-dimensional art. Does not treat opaque watercolors as a footnote to transparent watercolors nor as an ephemeral illustrator's or designer's medium. Covers many of the techniques, often with step-by-step illustrations of how an artist arrives at a finished painting. This book was published as one of Studio Vista's "Beginner's Guides," and it is that. As it was written, illustrated, and published in Great Britain, it starts off with the British approach to painting with watercolors--papers stretched or clipped to boards, not-too-large round brushes, and washes. This is a plus for any beginner. After this conservative start, many techniques using this medium are explored via illustrations and step-by-step instructions. With the paucity of available books dealing exclusively with gouache as an art medium, Patricia Monahan's book serves as a welcome introduction to opaque watercolor painting.
