Humphry Repton is considered one of the creators of the extraordinary cultural product that goes by the name of "English garden". This is the first Italian translation of Observations on Landscape Gardening, a fundamental work on the subject in question, in which Repton demonstrates both extensive practical experience and theoretical preparation (his cultural background ranged from literature to painting to scientific disciplines). Repton collected his projects and visions on how to intervene on a site in the Red Books, the "Red Notebooks" that made him famous because in them clients could see the project and the difference between the before and after of the environment to be redesigned. If one could make a literary comparison, in terms of taste, approach and style, it would be with Jane Austen, who in balance and elegance identifies the most intimate character of England. Austen, moreover, expressly quotes Repton in her Mansfield Park (1814). Aesthetics and good taste are essential ingredients for balance in the relationship between nature and art, in the conception and realization of parks, gardens, palaces themselves and in the center of the great stately estates.
