Based on the historical event of the Tang monk's pilgrimage for Buddhist scriptures, the narrative is richly embellished by the author's artistic imagination, offering a profound reflection of the social realities of its time. The story follows Sun Wukong (the Monkey King) from his birth and rebellion in Heaven, through his encounter with Tang Sanzang (the monk), Zhu Bajie (Pigsy), and Sha Wujing (Sandy), to their westward journey in search of scriptures. Along the way, they vanquish demons and monsters, enduring eighty-one tribulations before finally reaching the Western Paradise and attaining Buddhahood. In 1953, during the early years of the Writers Publishing House, among its very first publications were these four classical masterpieces: Dream of the Red Chamber, Water Margin, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Journey to the West. These editions are among the earliest published in New China and remain some of the most influential. For this four-volume series, we have selected the editions that best capture the essence of each work: Dream of the Red Chamber (Cheng Yi Ben), Water Margin (Rong Yu Tang Ben), Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Mao's Commentary Edition), and Journey to the West (Shi De Tang Ben).
