FOREWORD

Helen Keller is loved the world over. Her accomplishments in the face of unique difficulties have stirred our sense of the heroic; her patient struggle and convincing triumph touch our hearts. No one can appreciate the secret of her growth without some knowledge of her spiritual background. To her, religion is a way of living day by day. In her view, spiritual life is as real and as practical as natural life. Her Christianity is built on the gospel of love.

Miss Keller is often questioned in public about her religion. She answers briefly, but always longs to say more. And so, when asked to write a book about her religion, she welcomed the opportunity to tell her many friends just what her religious ideals are and where she found them. It has been a labour of love, and she has poured her soul into it, not to argue a point, but to share with others what is of inestimable value to her.

Here is a mind kept singularly pure from childhood; here is a religious experience unhampered by the blindness of any sectarianism; here is a spiritual insight, a gift of perception, undulled by absorption in the things of sense life. Here is one in whom the Lord has worked a miracle, and she declares to us "One thing I know, that whereas I was blind, now I see."

About the author:

Helen Adams Keller (June 27, 1880 - June 1, 1968) was an American author, political activist, and lecturer. She was the first deafblind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. The story of how Keller's teacher, Anne Sullivan, broke through the isolation imposed by a near complete lack of language, allowing the girl to blossom as she learned to communicate, has become widely known through the dramatic depictions of the play and film The Miracle Worker.

A prolific author, Keller was well-traveled, and was outspoken in her anti-war convictions. A member of the Socialist Party of America and the Industrial Workers of the World, she campaigned for women's suffrage, labor rights, socialism, and other radical left causes. She was inducted into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame in 1971.

The Story of My Life, first published in 1903, is Helen Keller's autobiography detailing her early life, especially her experiences with Anne Sullivan.[1] Portions of it were adapted by William Gibson for a 1957 Playhouse 90 production, a 1959 Broadway play, a 1962 Hollywood feature film, and the Indian film Black. The book is dedicated to inventor Alexander Graham Bell. The dedication reads, "To ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL Who has taught the deaf to speak and enabled the listening ear to hear speech from the Atlantic to the Rockies, I dedicate this Story of My Life." An other kind of light

I enjoyed reading on the religious perspective of Helen Keller. If you are even mildly interested in spiritual matters, you should read this book.

Light In My Darkness

This is the best book I have come across to help open the door to a whole new 'World'. My husband of 30+ years recently passed on, or had his 're-birthday' into Heaven. Helen Keller introduces one to the enlightened writing, thinking, and spiritual experiences in the Spiritual Realms of a highly respected Swedish Scientist and Prophet or Intuitive, Emanuel Swedenborg 1688-1772. I especially appreciated how reading of his spiritual experiences helped Helen Keller. How they became for her, "Light In My Darkness". For me this book, and "Awaken From Death" Swedenborgs description of what happens to the Soul at the time of the transformation we call death, was and is a deep help and comfort. I also found www.swedenborg.com, then click on the Swedenborg Channel, a help in the healing of fear, grief, and opening to a whole new world of wonder, hope, love, wisdom, comfort, and Spiritual Reality.

Beautiful book. Helen Keller was truly a very special person.

Beautiful book. Re-edited from her own original work, "My Religion", and made more coherent. Helen goes into some detail about what makes Swedenborg's Christian doctrine such a beautiful Christian religion for her, and how it gave her the inspiration to live a life in dignity and inspiration to others (!) and to overcome or deal with her handicaps for almost 80 years. It has a few funny moments, such as her description of nature walks with an elderly friend. With her uncertain speech and his elderly hearing, he would have to ask her to repeat herself, but to do this he'd spell a question in her hand. With his advancing arthritis, his shaking hands letters could be difficult for her to decipher. She is an amazing writer, inspite of total lack of sound or sight to experience those senses. Despite total blindness and deafness, she writes with vibrant color and imagery.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It made me look again at what I believe and see it more clearly. This is a great introduction to the ideas of Emanual Swedenborg and the New Church.

Wonderfully informative, inspiring reading.

The newly revised and updated second edition of Helen Keller's autobiography originally published in 1927 includes a substantial foreword by Keller biographer Dorothy Herrmann. The deaf, dumb and blind Helen Keller (1880-1968) became an internationally known spokesperson for the blind. Her amazing story of being taught to communicate by Annie Sullivan is very well know. But what is not so well known Keller's faith in the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg whose spiritual vision gave her "the light in my darkness, the voice in my silence". Light In My Darkness is wonderfully informative and inspiring reading and this splendid edition will re-introduce a most remarkable woman to a whole new generation of readers.
