Empathy, respect, and a lot of heart for the female experience
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 19 years ago
I first read this book during my college years (in the late 70's) I own it since and loved it ever since, to this day. It has been my companion and informed me in my early realitionships, pregnancy, motherhood, and parenting of a girl child. I resonate with every bit of it and appreciate the empathy and soulfulness of the treatment. I have to say that I'm familiar with and appreciate both the psychonalyitic framing and experience. I also spent my early adult life in Buenos Aires, where the author lived and wrote this book (which I own in the original language). I'm coming back to this book with my daughter in puberty and myself looking for a second child in middle age. As a science student in Buenos Aires that became a university professor in the US, I also cherish the author's understanding that a full life for a woman has both room for relationship, motherhood, parenting, and a fulfilling job. This is my most beloved book. I gave it to my yoga instructor, an adorable woman whose day job is in children's mental health care, and whose education is in psychoanalysis.
