Merciless Remedies
Every era gets the quackery it deserves - and the cure it swears will finally fix everything.
Merciless Remedies is a history of the drugs, devices, and doctor-approved miracles that promised health and delivered something else entirely: a cowboy's rattlesnake liniment with no snake in it, a radium tonic that dissolved a millionaire's jaw, a president bled to death by his own trusted physicians, a Nobel Prize winner's research twisted into a marketing slogan he spent his career arguing against.
Some of these remedies were cons from the first bottle. Others came from sincere, credentialed doctors following the best theory their era had - bloodletting, mercury, lobotomy - right up until the evidence caught up with them, decades and thousands of bodies too late. This book tells both kinds of story, and shows exactly how each one can be told apart: who left a paper trail defending the idea, who treated their own family differently than their customers, and what it actually took - not a change of heart, but a body count and an act of Congress - to build a system that could catch the next one before it started.
From the traveling medicine show to the shoe-fitting X-ray machine, from a lobotomy performed while the patient recited the Lord's Prayer to a Silicon Valley blood-testing company that never quite finished inventing what it had already sold, Merciless Remedies traces two centuries of the same basic con wearing different paint - and asks why, packaging aside, it still works today.
