Mateo Delgado is a community writing teacher and published author in New Britain, Connecticut, founder of the Write to Rise workshop, an organizer with HAT Force, and a man who built a whole life out of a promise he made himself at seventeen. Ten years ago, he watched Jakub Nowak, the boy he loved, disappear from his life without warning. He has never quite stopped thinking about him. Then, on an ordinary Tuesday night, Jakub walks back through the door of the LEAD Community Center, older, quieter, carrying a decade he never meant to spend three states away. Book One: The First Draft follows Mateo and Jakub as they cautiously find their way back to each other, a library reading, a walk that turns into a confession, coffee that turns into forgiveness. As they reconnect, they also rebuild the writing partnership that first brought them together as teenagers: trading drafts, running workshops side by side, and relearning how to be honest on the page and off it. Book Two: Revisions deepens the relationship as old wounds resurface. Jakub reckons with his fear of being truly seen, comes out to his family a second time as an adult, and faces the fallout of choosing a life in New Britain, and with Mateo, over the one his father expected of him. The two men fight, break, and choose each other again, learning that love, like good writing, survives revision. Book Three: The Published Edition carries them into a shared future: reconciliation, a proposal, a wedding planned amid community chaos, and vows exchanged in front of the city that raised them both. In the final chapters, Mateo and Jakub found the Write to Rise Fellowship together, turning their own story into a program for the next generation of New Britain writers, closing, ten years later, on the same hillside where their story first began.
