This novel relates to the life and times of the witch Mabdelore Winter. The first book, The Bane of the Black Prince, covered the period between her leaving school, taking-up a scholarship at the Guild of Sorcerers and being appointed a Master of the Guild. Mab, with the help of the Archangel Uriel, had succeeded in purging the daemon infestation from her home plane and, in particular, slaying the daemon ruler Mahazael. In this second novel, Goddess of War, Mab's extraordinary origins are finally uncovered. The balance between the dark and the light had been in place for millennia, many had died, promises had been made and vows sworn to maintain the peace, but Mab did not believe in the balance. There could be no balance or compromise when innocents were being tortured and slaughtered. She would tear it down no matter the powers ranged against her. Mab's witch senses had become astonishing in their range and acuity, and she was afraid to test the limits of her physical and psychic powers. Indeed, she was afraid of what she was becoming and whether she would remain human.
