Love Me Not is a dark psychological thriller told in multiple POVs (mainly Jack and Jane) over two decades.
Jack, a poor but brilliant football star, and Jane, a beautiful, manipulative only child from a wealthy family, meet in middle school and become bound for life. Jack genuinely loves her; Jane sees him as a tool in her long-term plan to escape her small town, secure wealth, and eventually move to Italy.
Through high school and Harvard, Jane cheats on Jack with multiple men while posing as the perfect girlfriend and running secret sex-based side hustles. Jack stays willfully na ve until he discovers the truth on her phone. A violent turning point comes when Jack, in a dissociative blackout, kills Jane's professor-lover and rapes her. Jane has already murdered another man and covered it up with the help of a fixer, and her mother bribes Jack to stay with Jane and keep her under control, revealing Jane's severe mental health history.
Back in Ohio, Jack becomes a hyper-controlling lawyer who turns their home into a gilded prison. He keeps Jane on cameras and in a locked shock collar tied to an invisible fence, while she secretly sexts other men and slowly poisons him with cyanide from apple seeds. When she becomes pregnant with twins, she initially resents them but gradually bonds with her children, even as she accelerates her plan to escape.
On a couples' trip to Ottawa, Jane finally kills Jack by slipping a lethal dose of cyanide into his drink, staging his death as an allergic reaction. She returns to the U.S. as a grieving widow, collects the life insurance she maneuvered herself into, leaves their twins with both grandmothers and a nanny, and disappears to Italy under a new identity: Gianna Ferraro.
In Italy, Gianna lives her dream life-new career, therapy, and a passionate relationship with a wealthy, charming man calling himself "Finto Bugiardo." Convinced she has outrun her past, she agrees to marry him. But Finto is actually Nino Lombardi, the awkward boy she humiliated in middle school ("Lice Boy"), now a private investigator who has tracked her for years and witnessed her crimes. Their romance is an elaborate revenge plot.
On the night of their engagement, Nino drugs Gianna and abducts her. She wakes in a strange room, confronted with her old yearbook and shock collars now locked around her ankles, echoing Jack's earlier control. The story ends with Jane/Gianna trapped again-this time in the hands of a man shaped by the cruelty and violence she left in her wake.
