How to cover such a massive subject? I bought the first edition (2014) and am impressed with how much and how well Lonely Planet covered 221 countries across the breadth of this earth. Information on each country includes maps, beautiful photos, size, population including ethnicities, density compared to other countries, language(s), top experiences, food & drink, belief systems, best times to visit—and more! In less than 1,000 pages this book identifies those things that characterize the region, how to get around, and recommends books and films to deepen one’s understanding and appreciation of its culture(s). Instead of a single entry for the U.K. for example, separate entries are provided for each of its once independent components: England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland. This honors and recognizes the cultures that carry their own histories and identity.
