Soul-filled bridge building makes for better business

There are gold mines of insight in this delightful book with practical implications. In the spirit of Thomas More's WORK, Shipka draws from such diverse sources as Ram Das, Helen Caldicott, Jon Kabat-Zinn, and Leonardo da Vinci. In this age of victimization, Shipka finds the individual and purpose within a corporate structure. As a tour guide through a metaphorical forest, Shipka states this book is not about saving the world, (The world can take care of itself.) but it is about saving ourselves. Shipka takes previously overdone concepts like empowerment, building bridges, authenticity, integrity et al and integrates them with rich, non-Western metaphors that leave the reader with a sense of satisfaction. Initially, the text attempts to harmonize a seemingly impossible dichotomy of drawing upon the sacred in a business context, but by the end, the metaphors and inter-connectedness stay with the reader. As one thinks about being centered, authentic and honoring mystery, one comes to realize that transcendent business may not be an oxymoron after all. For those cynical about the rat race, this book is definitely worth a careful read.

A must read for anyone who cares about our future.

Barbara Shipka's book, Leadership in A Challenging World, is a must read, not only for people who work in business, but for people everywhere who care about the future of the workplace and the world. This is a highly readable and moving account of the journey towards wholeness, compassion, insight, and spiritual transformation within business. I am particularly moved by the section on the eight powers. Knowledge of these powers has provided me with a road map towards navigating the challenging and often complex areas of my personal life, and my role as a consultant within organizational change. Barbara Shipka's global vision and ability to bring contradictory perspectives into a unified 'field of view' has given me hope.
