The Narrator lives a dull, mostly solitary, sometimes unhappy non-existence as he struggles to discover the purpose and meaning of his life. In his dreams he is transported to a brutal, confusing world where he shadows his own Double as he embarks on a mysterious quest, accompanied by the 'Diamond Lady, an enigmatic figure who haunts the Narrator's memories. As his own life spirals downwards, the Narrator becomes ever more obsessed with his vivid dream-life, and gradually he begins to question whether it is his Double that truly exists...
