Book Overview

Peterson paints an unforgettable portrait of this rich, rugged landscape, populated by strong and spirited characters. When Dianne Chadwick urges her family to move to a ranch in the Montana Territory, she has no idea that her new life in the rugged frontier will not be the idyllic adventure she expects.

Not so much romance as personal development

This book is not a "romance" per se. Rather, it is a story about how the characters deal with loss and challenge, and how they grow as a person because of it. (I try to write that way myself.) Peterson does a masterful job of this character transformation, and that's the reason I had trouble putting this book down! The relationship (as opposed to "romance") between Cole and Dianne builds slowly, which some may see as a negative, but which find I much more compelling and deep. The passages relating to the characters' struggles with God are completely believable - for most of us have questioned God at some time or other. I'm looking forward to the next in the series!

Perfect...

My first Tracie Peterson book- and what a book it was! I quickly learned that Peterson is not afraid of penning death and sadness. The basic premise of this book is as follows: Dianne and her family decide to head west to Idaho to stay with an uncle after her father is killed in the crossfire between Union soldiers and Rebel townsmen. With her oldest brother staying behind (and finding himself involved in one bad situation after another) they experience one heartache after another on the trail. You are introduced to Cole Selby, one of the trail guides, who time and time again comes to Dianne's assistance. He is rather apathetic with his own past to overcome and you get brief glimpses of that. I would hesitate in calling this book a romance, though, more toward the end you experience more. It is certainly dramatic and life on the trail is an adventure in and of itself. Like in real life, Dianne experiences ups and downs (though in this first book of the series the downs outweigh). Peterson uses tragedy to strengthen faith and I found the themes very applicable to my life. The other books in this series are terrific, as well.

Love this series!

I love historical fiction and this book is some of the best I've read. This is the first book in the Heirs of Montana series and I can't wait to read #2!
