A letter with an offer of a vaguely-defined job in Mexico arrives at Joe Trinidad's Las Vegas address just when he could use the money. Unfortunately, he can't locate the writer of the letter, but is assured by his old friend Justine Carmichael - retired from the Los Angeles police, Homicide Division - that the offer is genuine.Though not prepared for the assortment of characters awaiting him at Las Palmas Motel (they include an over- friendly ex-show girl, an adolescent poet, an ageing playboy who has reached the point of no return, and a just-widowed Junior League type who has her own peculiar notions of how to conduct herself whilst in mourning), Trinidad manages to exercise his talents for making the best of things under somewhat less than ideal circumstances.That is, until a brutal murder turns the trip into serious business.The trail leads back and forth across the border, from Boppo's - a Mexican version of a third-rate Greenwich Village bar - to the swank bachelor quarters of a man- about-Hollywood. Not until there is a second killing and Trinidad himself has an uncomfortably close brush with the killer is the mystery unravelled and peace restored to the Las Palmas Motel.
