Job and the Dragon

This study of Job has two components: One is academic; the other is spiritual. As a result of excavations of Ugaritic inscriptions in the last century, scholars have been able to translate this ancient book with greater clarity. These discoveries have brought to light a strong mythological undercurrent in the Book of Job that has, by and large, been ignored. A convincing case can be made that there is a direct connection in the name and function between the same actors in the popular Combat Myth in the Near Eastern traditions and their counterparts in the Book of Job. They are named Leviathan, Behemoth, Mot and Yam. These demonic dragon-like creatures of the nether world cannot be translated as serpents, crocodiles, or hippopotami. The are fierce enemies of God and man that had to be defeated so that spiritual order could be restored. In the more recent translation of the Scriptures, the proverbially patient Job has become the "steadfast" Job (James 5:11). This change is not only a more accurate translation but is in keeping with his personality. Job is very human, going through his emotions to the extremes. He can be cynical, aggressive, volatile, accusatory, and especially self-righteous. To be called righteous is one thing; to call oneself righteous is quite another. After opening windows of vulnerability to forces beyond his control, Job still continues his path, not losing his focus on God. Although he is at times confused, dejected and abjectly disrespectful of God, he also has moments of keen spiritual insights. Ultimately, he is redeemed, restored and rewarded, not because of his righteousness, but because he humbly repents in dust and ashes. This is indeed the narrative of God's wonderful grace. RJB
