A race to be the first to get there meant minimal testing. Governmental secrecy meant something else. Something happened they hadn't realized might. Along with FTL, there was time travel.

Mum sold the farm, so I have to either move to the continent with her, or sleep in the street. Maybe an easy government job, something secure but boring, would pay for my wifi and gaming. Something like... Time Management, Inc.
