It does work!: A bike world tour of the other kind

When I was an adult, the dream of a trip around the world by bicycle was born.
This dream was dazzlingly colorful and seemed within reach.
My partner Antje and I wanted to discover many countries, peoples and landscapes that were still unknown to us.
The challenge of doing this with our own muscle power gave us a feeling of freedom and independence.

But first the family, the job and the home played a big role. We had responsibilities, including for our twelve-year-old daughter.
In my early forties, reality caught up with me. I took stock: Where was I in life? Where had my dreams gone?
The infamous midlife crisis had me firmly in its clutches.
Torn between my rootedness on the one hand and my desire for freedom on the other,
I finally decided to simply cut my dream into manageable slices. That way I would be able to combine the best of both.

Carried away by this idea, Antje was gripped by sporting ambition.
Together with me, she wanted to seize the opportunity to make our dream come true after all.
