A Vital Reading on Contemporary Life and Death Issues

Religious, Ethical and Social Views: Religionfacts.com provides comparative social and ethical views of different Christian Denominations, on various life and death issues, such as contraception, abortion, euthanasia, suicide, death penalty, and war. They provide some expert opinions on some of those nationally dividing issues. A senior 'Policy Analyst' for Bioethics declared; "I never met Terri Schiavo but her living and dying clarified truth for me in unexpected ways. Her life and death impacted how I view life and death, and decisions that are made in the crossing." They also quote various OT and NT verses which evidently support the sanctity of life, to the extent of our limited choices even with our own bodies, "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body." (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, NRSV) Why 1975 Issues? It seems very beneficial to read a basic book written by the director of advanced legal studies, U. of London viewed by Lord Ramsey, Archbishop of Canterbury as; "I rejoice that the theologian among the lawyers should possess such knowledge and persuasion." While professor Norman Anderson, long interested in bioethical issues of life and death, and their potential effects recounts that when he was invited to give the London Lectures in Contemporary Christianity for 1975, as a judge, he turned to the 'experts', declaring, "my method was the only one possible, I think to one with my background: to turn to expert friends for advice..., and to enlist help in dealing with technical points in the question period which followed each lecture." A wise methodology that our legislators avoid or ignore. Although the technical, medical, and legal details for the ever evolving issues kept getting overwhelmingly more complicated, this outstanding author thematic approach still commands with great clarity, even 30 years later! Main discussed issues: 1. The sanctity of human life: Some contemporary problems 2. Genetic Engineering and Artificial Insemination 3. Birth Control, Sterilization, and Abortion 4. The Prolongation of Life, Transplant surgery, Euthanasia and suicide 5. capital Punishment, Violence, Revolution and War
