"This Is My Story" is a series published by Weekly Reader Early Learning Library, which very aptly introduces young readers (ages 9-12) to children who immigrated to the United States. Each book in the series focuses on one country wherein a child shares his/her personal story depicting the differences and similarities as seen by them between living in the United States and living in their country of origin. Books in the "This Is My Story" series include those on: Afghanistan, Chile, South Korea, and Ukraine. Found in the juvenile nonfiction literature department of public libraries, this series shouldn't be limited to kids ages 9-12, for even those older are sure to enjoy them, learn from them, and wish to explore in greater detail the countries showcased. The cover of "I Come from Ukraine (This Is My Story)" features Serhiy in his classroom in his new home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; the bottom of the cover shows the blue and yellow flag of Ukraine, Serhiy's country of origin in Eastern Europe. Large colorful, crisp images together with large fonts encourage young readers to delve into discovering the differences and similarities for themselves. Educational throughout, geography skills are encouraged with simple, colorful maps (Ukraine and the countries which border Ukraine in Eastern Europe; and, the United States, with the states shown and Wisconsin highlighted); reading proficiency is promoted by leveled text (text in bold is further explained in a glossary); and, the content features cultures, foods, and religions. The Table of Contents in front and the Index in the back outline various topics covered. Serhiy's story is a personal one and shows lots of color images to enhance visually his story via prose. A section called, For More Information, gives good reference sources for additional information about Ukraine. Two of the books mentioned in this section are Ukraine in Pictures--please see my review of Jeffrey Zuehlke's book and my images of Ukraine, which I took there in 1993 and 1994; another book to explore is called Welcome to Ukraine (Welcome to My Country series)--please see my review of this fine book. To see samples of Ukrainian children's art, visit the web address given; to sample sounds of lots of traditional Ukrainian music (all music was recorded live), a web address is also given. Author, Valerie J. Weber, lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and has been writing for children and adults over twenty-five years. She's done a fine job with "I Come from Ukraine (This Is My Story)" which is a professional presentation that's informative and sure to enthrall readers both young and those young at heart. Heartily recommended, "I Come from Ukraine (This Is My Story)" definitely deserves five stars! Addendum: Children may enjoy other books on Ukrainian topics, which I've reviewed--many of them have images taken by me in Ukraine. There are currently fifteen books listed on my Listmania list entitled, "Children's Corner--for
