Higher Education Needs to Change: A Student’s Perspective on American Universities

Can the public's trust in higher education be restored? Americans' confidence in universities is at an all-time low. If conditions are to improve, students and administrators must start working together. Is the Pandemic to Blame? Student satisfaction dropped significantly after the switch to online learning from in-person learning during the spring 2020 semester. What Is "Equity?" Universities may be violating the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972. Why Is Depression Soaring? From 2007 to 2019, major depression among university students jumped by 10%. Can Alternative Learning Styles Help? Using alternative methods to learning in conjunction with traditional exams does a far better job of determining how much a student knows, as well as their effort to understand course concepts. These are several of the difficult questions I address in this piece. I offer advice to parents, students, and prospective students, as well, so that they can better navigate this daunting university environment.
