Annette and Xavier Stewart take their son on a Colorado Ski trip to Telluride. While there, Xavier receives a desperate call from his Brother in Baton Rouge, LA. His daughter Jannie is on a geology field trip and goes missing when a snow storm strikes the area. Xavier is asked to go to Ouray, CO to see what he can do to help find his niece. Jannie and her grad student instructor are taking readings at a geological station when the grad student is fatally shot and Jannie is seriously wounded. The shooter is a US Marine who calls himself Jonah Abaddon. He is under the influence of pills administered to reduce the effects of PTSD. He went undercover and his pills were modified by the people he's spying on. After shooting two college students, he tries to cover up his crime then things go bad. Local Sheriff Bob Harris begins a search for Jannie and discovers a crime scene of the grad student's death. Jannie is still missing. Annette and Xavier help in the search hoping Jannie is still alive. Jonah is spying on a Chinese company drilling core samples on BLM land looking for rare earth metals. They sent a hitman to western Colorado to kill Jonah and recover or destroy the drilling machines because of the attention over the student shootings. All of this is giving the Stewart family a case of High-Country Blues.
