Hänsel And Gretel; A Fairy Opera In Three Acts

By Engelbert Humperdinck and Adelheid Wette

Book Overview

Two children, one song, and a path that vanishes into the dark trees. The forest feels very close. Adelheid Wette's "Hansel and Gretel; A Fairy Opera in Three Acts" gives the beloved brother and sister adventure from Brothers Grimm fairy tales a new voice as a fairy tale opera, rich with danger, wonder and play. In this late 19th century opera, the Hansel and Gretel opera text follows the children deep into classic german folklore: an enchanted forest gingerbread house, a wicked witch story, and the fragile courage that must carry them home. Presented here in English as a three act opera text, this edition is ideal for singers, directors and readers alike: a supple childrens opera script for the rehearsal room, a ready school play adaptation script, or a vivid childrens theatre performance text that keeps the music alive on the page. Its lyrical scenes, clear structure and vivid roles make it welcoming to young performers while still rewarding for adults who love the intersection of music, myth and stagecraft. For students of opera and theatre history, it offers a direct window into how fin-de-siecle artists reinvented folk material for the modern stage. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
