Photographically realistic color paintings capture 120 genera of dinosaurs--plus other prehistoric animals--organized according to evolutionary relationships. If these grand creatures still walked the earth today, this would be the field guide you'd take on your "dino safari" to identify them. Each one appears in its habitat, a fact file that gives you information at a glance: each creature's length and weight; a physical description; its diet; and more. To get a good sense of its comparative size, a small sketch of the dinosaur appears next to that of another animal like, a human or elephant. Look on the world map to see where the Theocodontosaurus, Plateosaurus, Chasmosaurus, or others dwelt, and on the timeline to learn when. Plus: an introduction provides general background on dinosaur classification and traits.
My four year old is a dinosaur expert. He can give you specs and names on virtually any dinosaur. He has found the mistakes made by his dinosaur computer program and even found a blunder at the local museum. He has read tons of dinosaur books, but this is his favorite. This is not a story book, it is more like a "field guide". It has computer generated (not cartoon) images. If your child, or even an adult enthusiast is intereseted in a reference guide, this is one I recommend. Each dinosaur has a fact file including the its size (along with a comparitive image vis-a-vis either an elephant or a human), time period, classification, description, diet, and time period, and geographic habitat. Along with a picture of the dinosaur will also be a short couple or few paragraphs. It has a helpful index and further resource list in the back. Unlike many books on the subject which only cover a few dinosaurs and offer scant information, this book is stocked full, 255 pages! Yet it is still easy to use and serves as a quick reference.
