In typical Richard K. Morgan fashion, we get to explore what happens when a catastrophic event interrupts a World War - in this case, the Fae return.
Duncan Silver is not what most people would think of as a hero; he definitely has his flaws, but he does good things (no spoilers). This is a complicated world, and Morgan has so much fun exploring this environment and how the government and piblic would react.
I would have liked some of the side characters to shine a little more, like Mimi Rush, but this wasn't their story.
Overall, it was a mad dash with Old World Fae, witches, WW1 trauma, and pure adrenaline.
