Book Overview

A proven approach to helping children build emotional resilience for a happier and healthier life

Childhood should be a happy and carefree time, yet too many children and teens are stressed-out and exhibiting symptoms of anxiety. Parents everywhere want to know: How can you recognize when stress has crossed over into a full-blown anxiety disorder? How can you prevent anxiety from taking root? And how do you help your child break patterns of fear, worry, and avoidance and lead a happy, productive life? Fortunately, anxiety is very treatable, and parents can do a lot to help get their children's emotional well-being back on track.

In Freeing Your Child from Anxiety, childhood anxiety expert Dr. Tamar Chansky shares easy, fun, and effective tools for teaching children and teens to outsmart their worries and take charge of their fears. You'll find scripts for explaining anxiety to children of different ages, creative strategies for navigating common phobias, and "Do It Today" activities that help them implement the book's advice right away. This revised and updated edition also prepares children to buffer themselves from the pressures of our competitive, test-driven culture and build resiliency skills.

These simple solutions can help parents protect their children from needless suffering--and ensure they have the tools to thrive today and for a lifetime.

A miracle for me and my 8-yr-old

From the first page, this book gave me inspiration. I have two children with anxiety disorder and I learned right away that some of the ways I was trying to "help" were actually making them more anxious. After showing the books' illustrations and ideas to my son, we are now working TOGETHER against the anxiety. The results are nothing short of a miracle! My daughter's anxiety is under control with medication, but we will soon be trying to take her off, and we have the tools to help her.

A must read

This is a must read book for parents of children with anxiety disorders. So many books tell you what to do but this one tells you how to do it. Its chock-full of practical and useful examples on what to say. Dr. Chansky tells you how to talk to your child about anxiety in kid friendly and parent friendly language. She gives parents a way to understand what their child is experiencing so they can help. Dr Chansky also gives advice on how to handle lots of difficult day to day situations. Though written for parents, this book is a great help for therapists by providing a language to talk to kids and treatment guidelines for the different anxiety disorders useful for even the experienced clinician.

Excellent advice for all who struggle with anxiety

This book is a pleasure - full of excellent, concrete advice about how to help your child master his or her internal "worry brain". But what surprised me is how much insight it gave me about how to handle my own worries and anxieties. Although written for parents, Dr. Chansky's insights and advice would be helpful to anyone who struggles with fears or phobias. Excellent resource, beautifully written.

excellent resource

This book is absolutely terrific. It is incredibly easy-to-read and provides wonderfully concrete suggestions. It is an excellent resource for any parent who is struggling with trying to help their child with anxiety. In addition, it gives great suggestions to all parents, whether their child is overtly anxious or not, in helping deal with normal, day-to-day anxieties (such as being afraid of the dark).
