If you're searching for a holiday romance, look elsewhere...

Twenty-six-year-old Eve Rowland has never been one to stand out in the crowd. She has gone through her entire life living in the small, albeit quaint, Midwest town of Cable, Wisconsin, a place where people don't lock their front doors, and everyone knows one another. Which means that choosing a suitable guy is quite complicated, due to the fact that most Cable residents are locals, meaning you've probably known them since kindergarten. Which leaves Eve unwed, without and prospects, and living with her two parents, who love her dearly, but want to see their beautiful, oft-times homely daughter, meet a nice man and settle down. So when she bumps into thirty-six-year-old Luck McClure as he's exiting the town tavern one night, Eve is instantly interested. Sure, Luck referred to her as a "brown mouse," obviously commenting on her drab appearance, but his shiny blue eyes, and loving smile have taken effect on her, leaving an impression. Of course, Eve doesn't believe that she'll run into the handsome gentleman again. But chance brings them together when his eight-year-old son, Toby, smashes the windshield of her car with a baseball, reuniting the two strangers, and rekindling the affections they had for one another. Soon, the two have begun a relationship that has the power to heat an entire room, which quickly leads into an engagement. Eve believes that she's happy with the new arrangement, but the fact that she's never lived on her own, and has never been a mother, leaves a nagging feeling in the back of her mind that begins making her questions whether Luck is the man for her, or if she's destined to be unlucky in love forever. Generally I don't read books in the romance genre. However, around Christmas, I purchase just about every holiday romance that is released, and devour them one by one. Therefore, while I felt that Janet Dailey's EVE'S CHRISTMAS was an enjoyable romp, I think that it would be more appropriately titled 'Eve's Year', as the entire novel takes place throughout the spring and summer months, and only briefly touches upon the winter holidays during the last 30-50 pages. Personally, I feel that the synopsis on the back cover, and the first few pages were quite misleading, garnering the thoughts that this was solely a holiday romance. That is certainly not the case. Yes, Eve is enchanting. Luke is lovable. And Toby will wiggle his way into your heart in the same fashion as that of his pet worm, Squirmy. However, this is not a holiday romance, so if that's what you're looking for, your best bet is to look elsewhere. If, however, you're looking for an enjoyable romantic thrill ride with endearing characters, and good romantic development, you'll certainly find EVE'S CHRISTMAS enjoyable.
