Lyrical, Poetic Quality to the Stories

This short story collection varied in quality but some of the best had a very lyrical, poetic quality reminiscent of Alice Hoffman. Thompson's mentor is Rosellen Brown, one of my favorite authors. Some stories of special note are: Ice Flowers - A Beautiful story of a woman touched by her mentally ill neighbor's night cries. New Bed - A Story of paths chosen and past possibilities. Can the past and present intersect? The Birch Tree - A great-aunt's gift to her niece is a tree to nurture and watch grow. The Afternoon of the Poetess - An intensely caustic look at the aura of hypocrisy in the arts. I recommend this book for short story lovers. Overall, they will not disappoint.
