Shimmer Fights the Final Battle -- a review by Vijay

In the final book of the Dragon Series by Laurence Yep, Shimmer, the dragon princess, and Monkey and Indigo fight the last battle against the Boneless King to save Shimmer?s home. The Boneless King, disguised as the butcher, has evil men who try to kill Shimmer and her friends. The bonless King?s allies are very powerful and Shimmer and Monkey and Indigo nearly die When Thorn, the human boy, gets his soul stuck inside the dragon cauldron, Shimmer and her friends find it hard to continue. The Boneless King wants the cauldron because he wants to boil Shimmer?s home, the sea. Shimmer, Indigo, and Monkey make a long and dangerous journey to the dragon kingdom but things get worse, for Shimmer?s brother, Pomfret, has sided with the Boneless King. The book starts out a little bit slowly but if you are patient you will love it. This is a great book -- it is my favorite book of the Dragon Series and maybe my favorite book ever. I rate this a five star because of Laurence Yep?s great way of describing things, and of giving people actions that fit their personalities. Monkey?s personality makes him the funniest character in the book -- he makes fun of Shimmer, cheats in games against her, and a lot more funny stuff. The story is full of surprises. People who like mystery, humor, and lots of adventure all in one will enjoy this book.

Dragon War bookreview

There is an evil, boneless, and immortal king that of the powerful dragon cauldron with the soul of a powerless human soul. The soul of Thorn depends on a dragon princess, Shimmer. She is the last hope for Thorn's soul. Thorn is trapped inside an all out war on the dragonkind. The king(known as the "Boneless King") wants to use the cauldron for evil causes.First he wants to boil the seas. He is ready to also destroy the entire dragonkind if he has to. Else where the Dragons prepare for war agfainst the the Boneless king. The princess of dragons, Shimmer, is fighting to save her home. For this she has to ally with Promfet. It is a respite from sword-and-sorcery stereotypes. The dragon princess, a wizard monkey and ,another human cihld Indigo transform themselves into guards, horses and even fleas to elude the Boneless king. In desperation they return to the kingdom of high kings to recruit with her kinmates in a fight for their lives and to save the inland sea. Thorn later becomes a part of the Cauldron to restore the home of Shimmer, the inland sea. They complete the task, but loose one of their mates in the battle. Then they flee. This is a wonderful ending to an even better series.

Great finish to the series!

Well, I have to say that this book finally pulled it off, it gave the entire series a fine and exciting closure with plenty of action, yet not losing its powerful sense of characters. The whole saga together combines fine mythology with a highly original sense of magic and plenty of action scenes balancing it all perfectly with the cast of characters. Anyway, in this final installment of the series, Monkey tells the tale once again as they continue to try to regain the cauldron (holding the spirit of their friend Thorn) so they can use it to restore the Inland Sea, and fight against the evil Boneless King. One thing I loved was that this was possibly one of most unusual fantasy stories I have ever read (where else would you find main characters that include a dragon princess, a magical monkey, a teenage witch, and two human children?) and yet, none of the characters fall into stereotypes and they all maintain their unique personalities throughout the book. Also, this is one of the few books I've read where male and female characters treat each other with respect, and their doesn't seem to be any prejuduses among the main characters. Anyway, all I can say is that if you love fantasy, definitely read this book, though it would be better understould of you've read the previous three (all of them just as good!).

Dragon War

Dragon War The companions have now been reduced to three, the dragon princess, Monkey, and Indigo. Together, they must outsmart the Boneless King and Shimmer's renegade brother, Pomfret, not to mention the faithful sidekick, Snowgoose. As hard as it may be, the companions must also win back the trust of Sambar, the dragon king, so united the dragons can all fight against the great evil. The companions must use the cauldron to restore the Inland Sea so the dragons have somewhere to live. In the book, the companions find out that one former member of their group is much more noble than formally believed. Will the companions (or what's left of them) destroy the Boneless King? Will the Inland Sea be restored? Can the soul in the cauldron be released? Will peace ever descend to the land?

Amazing, satisfying conclusion to the fine series

Laurence Yep's conclusion to the Dragon of the Lost Sea is as fine as any of his previous books, most notably Dragon Steel. Mr. Yep has captured the restless, jesting spirit of the monkey and the pride of the dragon from the Chinese myths and put them into a delightful series. Our tale begins (or rather, continues) with the intrepid team of Monkey, the Dragon Princess Shimmer, and her companion Indigo on a quest to recover the dragon cauldron: a bowl that holds the future of a sea-a sea that is Shimmer's clan's past, present, and future. Captured by the Witch Civet, the Inland Sea can only be restored...with the cauldron. Trapped within the artifact is the soul of a human boy, Shimmer's friend Thorn. Now, however, the relic is no longer an instrument of importance to just the Inland Sea. The cauldron has fallen into the hands of a terrible entity, the Boneless King, and all must risk everything to thwart the King from boiling the dragon seas away. But more than just battle awaits in this wonderfully magical and creative novel. Shimmer's brother has turned on her, and even though she is a high Princess of the dragons, Shimmer has been exiled for taking the Dream Pearl: the source of her only magic-by her brother's manipulations and lies, for their mother had willed the pearl to Shimmer. The group must face everything from living statues, flying mountains, and startling revelations of the past to recover Thorn...and the future of the entire dragon race, and the world for that matter, for before Thorn freed him (albeit unknowingly), the Boneless King has had time to plot his revenge... This tale is one of Laurence Yep's finest, along with the other Dragon of the Lost Sea books, Tongues of Jade, Dragonwings and Dragon's Gate
